Allentown, PA was originally named Northamptontown in 1762 by its founder, William Allen. Allen, a former Mayor of Philadelphia and Chief Justice of Colonial PA's Supreme Court hoped it would be a commercial center, but it remained a small farming community during his lifetime. Despite its official name, it was widely know as "Allen's town" and the name was changed in 1838 to Allentown.
Starting in the 1850's the iron industry grew to support the railroads and Allentown grew beyond what its founder could have dreamed of. With the decline of iron trade in the early 20th century, Allentown turned to producing silk, furniture, beer and cigars. In today's service economy the ever resilient Allentown is re-inventing itself again to serve the needs of the community.
