North Wales, PA was part of a 1702 William Penn land grant and was settled as a farming community by Welsh immigrants. What is now Main Street was originally an old Indian trail and was laid out as the Great Road in 1728. It was a toll road until 1914. The building of the North Pennsylvania Railroad changed the character of the area in the mid 1800's and hotels, and restaurants sprung up around the train station. Many of the large homes were opened to summer guests from Philadelphia.

Many of North Wales homes were built during the late19th and early 20th centuries, and many have been preserved, including many of the houses on South Main Street.
